5 Tips for Winter Photoshoots
Winter is here my friends!
Here in Toronto, we’ll be experiencing colder temperatures for at least the next 9 months. Our first snow fall over the weekend solidified this fact – a bit of a shock for most of us. We usually don’t get snow until right before or after Christmas.
Although I acknowledge winter’s here, I still welcome the chance to shoot outdoors in natural light for relaxed and totally natural portraiture.
Here are some ideas and a few photos of me in my own mini photo shoot this past weekend. Winter can’t stop us!
Wear layers of clothing to stay warm
Wearing at least 3 layers is the best way to stay warm. When wearing a bunch of thin layers you’re much more likely to stay warm for longer. I love wearing tights or leggings to keep my legs warm plus a few layers on top. Men can always wear long johns under their pants – my hus Andre’s layer of choice!
Coffee, tea, me?!
Your favorite hot drink is bound to help keep your hands and your insides warm. So packing a cup of tea, hot chocolate, or coffee or picking one up on your way to your session is always a great idea.
Visualize yourself in your favorite vacation spot
Our minds are really powerful, so think about your last vacation in a hot climate or the place in the world you’ve been dying to visit! I know I’ll be thinking about my recent trips to Saint Lucia, Trinidad, and Jamaica!
Wear winter fashion
Being stylish in the winter isn’t always easy, but I think hats, knit scarves, and boots can actually add texture to your photos and make them more interesting. I personally love wearing leather, fur, and bold hats like the one I’m pictured below. They may not be ideal for a real winter day, but for some cute photos, it’s totally worth the sacrifice!
Take as many car breaks as you need!
Keeping the car close by is my favorite tip. Being able to get some the heat blasting for 10 minutes helps keep everyone involved comfortable in the colder temps.
Hoping that my ideas inspire you to take the plunge. We’re pretty lucky to have four seasons, and since winter is the longest of them all, I think it’s necessary to take advantage of the wonderland for some different looking portraits. I’m not a fan of winter, but I’ve decided that I won’t let my feelings get in the way of great photography!
