Toronto Makeup Artist Interview: Daneille Mattis
Daneille Mattis is a Toronto based makeup artist and a well-known YouTube beauty guru. She is extremely talented and truly amazing for taking time out of her busy schedule to chat! Today, she’s sharing some of her secrets with us on the blog! We collaborated on a recent bridal beauty shoot and she’s got some very useful advice for brides looking for the soft glam look for their big day! SCP: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your passion for makeup. How did you get started?
DM: As a full time business student, I spent most of my free time watching makeup tutorials on YouTube and became inspired to try a hand at makeup myself. I first began practicing on friends and family and eventually i decided to start a YouTube channel of my own, doing tutorials on how to achieve different makeup looks. The feedback I received was incredible and unexpected and it fueled my passion for makeup and beauty. It wasn’t long after that I decided to turn my passion into profit and I haven’t looked back since.
SCP: What inspired this makeup look?
DM: I’m known for creating very natural makeup looks. Looks that are soft but still glam, that allows the person’s true beauty to shine through, rather than to be covered up. This, I believe is so important, especially for brides. I strive to have all my clients look like the best versions of THEMSELVES and that is what inspires my all makeup looks, including this one.
SCP: What products did you use to achieve this look?
DM: I highlighted and contoured lightly with both cream and powder products, and used peachy tones for her eyes, lips and cheeks. I used a white eyeliner in her water line to make her eyes appear brighter and I also used a gold loose powder to reflect light above her cheekbones, to give her skin a natural glow.
SCP: How do wedding makeup trials work?
DM: Trials are available for brides and are booked weeks in advance. It really provides an opportunity for me to get to know and understand the bride, and to figure out what looks would best compliment her on her wedding day. It also gives the bride confidence and a peace of mind, as she is given a preview of exactly how she will look on her big day. No surprises. Also, brides receive a complimentary touch up kit, once a trial has been completed.
SCP: Do you offer makeup services for the bridal party as well?
DM: Yes, I offer services for the bridal party and well as the mothers of the bride and groom.
SCP: How long should brides allow in their day of schedule for makeup application?
DM: Bride’s should allow at least an hour and 15 minutes for them self and 45 minutes to an hour for bridal party members. If a trial was completed, it speeds up the process.
SCP: What are your top 3 beauty tips for brides?
DM:
- If brides are planning on getting facials, it should be done at least 2 weeks in advance, to allow time for the skin to react and heal before the big day.
- Waxing anywhere on the face should be done at least 5 days in advance because makeup doesn’t sit well on freshly waxed skin.
- If you plan on using fake tan for the big day, have a test run before your make-up trial so that your makeup artist can see what colour your skin becomes with the tan and is able to match it accordingly.
SCP: What is most important for brides to remember on their wedding day makeup wise?
DM: Waterproof eye makeup is crucial! This is probably more so for makeup artists. But brides should ensure that their artists are using waterproof mascaras and eyeliners. We have to be prepared for the waterworks!
