Tips for Wedding Preparation Photographs

Some of the most moving moments take place right before the wedding has even begun, so I believe a love story would be incomplete without the documentation of a bride and groom’s preparation.

There’s always so much excitement and emotions that are shared. As a photographer, I get to observe these events and watch them unfold. My favorite moment is always when the bride puts on her dress for the first time. That’s when you know it’s all about to begin!

I also love seeing a bride’s makeup transformation and the moments when she’s putting on her accessories from her veil, to her earrings, to her shoes. Whether a woman dreamed of the moment as a little girl or not, when it happens it’s one of those things that can take your breath away. Here are a few tips that can help with making the wedding preparations run smoothly for your photographer.

Gather the accessories

Before the ceremony, most photographers will photograph the following: shoes, dress, cuff links, jewelry, perfume bottle, garter, rings, florals and veil. By having these items together, you eliminate the possibility of having to search for them when the photographer arrives.

Replace the plastic hanger with a wooden one

This is a really small detail, but it makes all the difference when trying to get a beautiful hanging a dress photo. Another option for the dress is to have it laid out on a bed or on a dress form.

Designated helper

A bridesmaid or family member can be a big help with getting the photographer set up with anything they may need and it’s so much easier to ask someone in advance.

Tidy up

By keeping the area where you’re getting ready neat and tidy, you automatically ensure that there are less distractions in the photos so the focus can be on you!

Natural Light

Instead of getting ready in the basement, I always suggest using an area of the home, church, or hotel with the most natural light, if possible. Areas with large windows like a living room are the best for beautiful naturally lit photos.

Give yourself enough time

Most of all consider the timeline of the day. By scheduling enough time, you allow for stress free bridal prep photos. Nothing better than that!

To conclude today’s Tuesday Tips post, I’ll say sometimes things don’t always go according to the plan, but as everyone prepares for the day, it’s a priority to capture the events in the best way possible. The many details that have been carefully selected by the bride and groom are a representation of their love story.
