Ebony and Jeremy | Roostertail Detroit Wedding

I had an amazing time working with Ebony and Jeremy during their wedding last summer. They are a wonderful couple with such a lovely story and I’m so excited that they were featured over on Munaluchi Bride and The Knot recently. My favorite part of the wedding was their first dance. They slow danced to You and I (Nobody In The World) by John Legend. They were married right next to the river at the Roostertail. It was a stunning downtown Detroit wedding that I won’t forget. During their first dance they were literally lifted right of the ground – the dance floor elevated and there were beautiful and colorful waterworks right outside the window. It was a beautiful event with the newlyweds. Here are a few of my faves from the day.

Jeremy was following his dream, he recently moved to Michigan from South Carolina to start law school and never thought he’d find much more. Ebony was beginning her studies at the University of Michigan and her mind was far from the clutch of cupid. It was the groom’s aunt and uncle’s 10th wedding anniversary celebration that led the girl next-door to stop by and say hello. Jeremy noticed Ebony next door but never had the opportunity to introduce himself until that day. When Ebony walked inside Jeremy followed her to get a closer look and to make a quick formal introduction of himself. If you ask Jeremy a “lasting impression was left and the seed was planted.” Ebony and Jeremy found themselves sitting at the same table discussing Jeremy’s recent move to Detroit and school. The conversation didn’t last long because Ebony had to leave to meet some friends. Jeremy didn’t get Ebony’s phone number; luckily she was only a step away next door… Ebony left for school and Jeremy started law school and while apart they would have countless conversations building a friendship through the turbulence of school and life. After what seemed to be two quick years of friendship, Jeremy and Ebony decided to take their relationship to the next level. Ebony explains the delay as, “Jeremy waited until after I met his mother before making it official.” Jeremy made it special by getting down on one knee in her parent’s driveway and asking Ebony to be his girlfriend. Ebony always knew he was a keeper!

“Ebony was right there when I picked out and purchased the ring but thanks to the sales associate she was focused on other jewelry.” The ring had to be perfect for the perfect girl – round cut diamond with excellent clarity. Jeremy didn’t have to ask what kind of ring Ebony wanted because he already knew what would look great on her finger. Jeremy had the ring for over two months while waiting for the right moment to pop the question. Jeremy couldn’t ask Ebony without first visiting the Hartsfield’s residence to make his claim for Ebony’s heart.

It was on a weekend trip to Charleston, SC when Jeremy knew he would have the best opportunity to propose. They made a pit stop at Jeremy’s parents’ house and foundation for a lasting and loving relationship was laid. While Jeremy was outside talking with his best man about how he was going to propose, Ebony was inside having a conversation with Jeremy’s dad about marriage without the slightest clue he would pop “the question” the next day. They drove to Charleston and Jeremy took the chance to show Ebony some Southern Hospitality with a beautiful boat tour of Charleston then dinner on the beach. Afterwards, during an intimate walk on the beach, with sweaty palms and blurred thoughts, Jeremy began to express his love for Ebony and the future he wanted to share with her. Ebony wanted to stick her feet in the water and didn’t realize the point Jeremy was attempting to make but Jeremy insisted that they continue to walk. Now Ebony wanted to capture the opportunity to take some selfies on the beach, Jeremy had to act now. Ebony turned her head, reached for her phone and when she turned back around Jeremy had the ring out with the box open. All you could hear was “Oh my God” over and over again. Jeremy got down on one knee and in that moment Ebony realized “this is really happening.” With Ebony’s loud “oh my God” she now had the attention of everyone on the beach. There was resounding applause ringing from everywhere, Jeremy asked Ebony to walk through life with him forever, “Will you marry me?”

What are your favorite memories from your wedding?
The best memory of the night was our first dance as Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. Our first dance was so special and so surreal at the same time. We literally felt like we were on cloud nine. The stage elevated into the air mid way through the song as the waterfall went off in the background. In that moment I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Another favorite memory was our family dancing the night away as one!

What advice do you have for our brides-to-be?
Do not stress over the small stuff. Remember that the night is about you and your future husband. Do not let anyone dictate your special day!
