5 Fall Photo Shoot Tips

There are just a few things about the cooler season that really excite me. Since autumn is upon us, I thought I’d share my top 5 favorite things about this season we call fall.

1. Sunrise and sunset

Although I struggle to wake up early, the truth is sunrise is one of the perfect times of day to capture some gorgeous fall portraits. And for those that like to sleep in, I’d suggest booking a shoot later in the afternoon close to when the sun is about to set. At these times, the sunshine is beautiful. Photos are usually much more golden, warm, and bright. Plus, it’s perfect for capturing the leaves changing colors.

2. Grey days

Since winter’s super close it’s no secret that our sunny days days are numbered. Which makes most people feel like it’s not a good time to book a photo shoot. Sunlight does give me life, but it’s been known to overpower the natural look of fall colors sometimes. Typically, I don’t get depressed if the sun doesn’t come out much in the fall. Grey days are just as lovely for portraits. The overcast allows for soft and even light with less shadows. Photos taken under these circumstances can be pretty great as well.

3. Calm, cool, collected

Most people’s first instinct is to book portrait sessions in the summer, when the weather is hot. But that heat we love so much can lead to greasy foreheads and frizzy hair (or is it just me?!). Plus, summer goes by way too quickly and the photo shoot you had in mind will likely be put off until next summer (or never happen at all). Fall is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the calmer schedules and cooler temperatures.

4. Fall fashion and beauty

There are so many cute fashion and beauty options to try out. It’s a great time to wear chunky knits, cute boots, flattering layers, tights, patterns, or even a fun fall lip color that would be too bold or dark in the summer. Fall fashion can be super fun and cute too!

5. The holidays

Thanksgiving and then Christmas. Two awesome holidays and also a great excuse to share pretty fall photos with family and friends! Gift giving made easy.
