When I started in photography, I didn’t really consider just how special boudoir would be to so many of my clients. This is the type of photography that is all about beauty, femininity, and self-expression. I have found that most of the people who have celebrated their body in this way, have felt so much joy doing it.
There is freedom in acceptance and self-love and boudoir is one way to bring that joy to life. On the wedding day, sometimes brides give the groom a pair of cuff links or a watch, but what if you gave him some memorable images that he can enjoy for years to come? Not only will he enjoy it, but you’ll also enjoy the process of being photographed beautifully. In some instances brides will compile their images into a little black book or even blow up the images to be framed in your home. Either way, it’s a special moment that is made even more special when you see the smile and excitement on his face.
I’m always confident about my ability to create the most beautiful images, but I believe there are a few things that every client can do to help prepare for your boudoir session so that you get the best possible photos. Use this guide and get ready to celebrate yourself!
Prepare for Your Boudoir Session
- Moisturize and hydrate. Use your favorite lotion and/or light oils. A light oil that isn’t too oily is coconut oil. Be sure to also drink lots of water so that you’re skin as a nice glow to it.
- Professional makeup. Hire a professional. It’s a shoot just for you. A pro can help make sure skin is flawless and your eyes and lips pop.
- Sleep. Get to bed earlier than usual. Sadly makeup won’t hide tired eyes so get some extra sleep to make sure you’re well rested.
- Not too tight. A few hours before your shoot, wear loose clothing. If your clothes are too tight, they will leave lines and marks on your skin.
- Manicures and pedicures. Treat yourself to a manicure a few days before. A deep red nail polish or a neutral color looks great on camera.
- Practice in the mirror. Try out some facial expressions in the mirror. It may seem silly, but a little practice on your own builds confidence.
- Be confident in yourself. Even if this shoot is a gift for your significant other, IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU! It’s a celebration of your beauty and femininity, so celebrate and enjoy the process. No stress, your photographer will help you through the rest.
What to Bring and Wear
Keep in mind that sexy doesn’t necessarily mean nude or little clothing. Here are some wardrobe or theme ideas:
- Simplicity in white sheets. If we’re shooting in your home, put white sheets on your bed. They help make your room brighter and more inviting.
- What to wear. Corsets, classic or modern and playful underthings (boy short panties or low-rise are flattering to most figures and usually photograph better than thongs). Stockings or thigh high socks. High heels, stilettos, and/or boots
- Accessories. long necklaces, pearls, bold earrings, big flashy rings, bird cage veil, wide brim hats
- Something that belongs to your Significant Other.
- Regular clothing can be fun too or your significant other’s favorite outfit
