There’s so much security and power behind the camera, and that’s where I’m most comfortable. But by giving up that control and having others take my photo, I’ve learned how to be a better photographer.
Being a portrait photographer for so long can cause one to forget what it’s like to be in front of the camera. I’ve realized from personal experience that it can be a very anxiety inducing experience.
Truth is my love for photography started long before I became a professional photographer.
I used to love being the subject of photos. As a baby, my mother would pretend to take my photo with a camera to get me to quit crying. I would stop and smile in a heart beat and that’s where it all started.
My high school and college days were filled with countless photo ops with my friends. Since then, I rarely have the opportunity to be in a photo. But I realize that if I don’t make an effort, I could lose a very special connection to my clients.
How else could I empathize with a woman feeling a little self-conscious about her body or a couple that has never been in a professional photo shoot before.
As the subject in another person’s photo, I am powerless. And it’s not such a bad thing! Although the thought makes me super uncomfortable, my experience has given me the tools I need to help people relax and feel like they are in the hands of professional that is focused on making them look their best.
I aim to build confidence and make each person I get to photograph feel beautiful and by being in front of the camera (instead of just being in the background) I am learning more every day!
