I’m sharing this post because I took a poll on my Instagram page yesterday and most of you asked for a tutorial. So here it is! I had the most amazing shoot featuring two stunning gowns, one beautiful model, and a gorgeous DIY bridal bouquet by me! I rarely make things besides coffee and pictures. This is a first for me! I had no idea that I had it in me to create a bouquet, but since I didn’t have a florist on the creative team, I had to take matters into my own hands. It was a pleasant surprise to put something together that photographed so beautifully. The floral arrangement was quite quick and easy and I really believe anyone can do it.
I watched a bunch of YouTube videos to help me out and I’m sharing my step by step process today so that you can do it it too for your home, for your wedding, or for a photo shoot, like I did. I hope this inspires you to make something pretty!
I got most of the flowers from my local grocery stores. It may be cheaper to get them from a wholesale flower shop, but if you don’t have any in your area you can always try getting your flowers from Costco, Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods. I spent about $50 for all the flowers. The other items can be picked up at Michael’s.
This is super important because roses have thorns and green leaves. I used gardening scissors to remove them and clean the stems completely so that the only thing remaining was the flower. I also removed the old petals around the outside of the roses and used my fingers to gently open up the roses.
I put all of the items above into piles on a table. Your hands will be full so make sure all of your items are ready to move into your bouquet.
I started with one or two flowers in my left hand. Then I picked one stem at a time, alternating between greens, fillers, and roses. I used my right hand to add them to the bunch in my left hand. I kept turning the bouquet in my left hand, while also checking periodically in a full length mirror to see how it looked.
Once you’ve made the bouquet to a size you like, use your tape and wrap it around the bunch. I needed help with this part because my bouquet was really big and my arm was quite tired. If you use floral tape, make sure you go around it a few times because it sticks to itself.
Add the ribbon around the tape. The ribbon is the final step so it’s important to try and make it as smooth and as tight as possible. Once you wrap it around the stems, use the pins to hold it in place.
I hope this little step-by-step guide helps create a DIY floral arrangement for your next photo shoot or wedding! The outcome wasn’t perfect, but it photographed quite beautifully in every direction. I can’t wait to try this out again with different flowers soon. Special thanks to the creative team who made this shoot a huge success!
